Who not to date

Since I did a post about what I would possibly look for in a woman that I’m dating, here are the things/type of girls that I would prefer not to date…even though I’m pretty down with whatever.

1) Coworker. It’s not illegal even though I guess in some jobs it can be. I just don’t want my worlds colliding. I got that from Seinfeld when George’s fiancĂ©e Susan became friends with Elaine. His two social circles crossed and that caused him problems.

Have I been attracted to a co-worker? Of course and I’m sure there was a time that one or twenty were attracted to me at one point but that line can’t be crossed. What if you hit it off with your co-worker and then you break up? Do you really want to see your ex every day at your job? Furthermore, if it was a bad breakup, charges like sexual harassment and terrible things like that can go down. Not a good look.

Exception: I guess if you’re in the adult film industry this wouldn’t be a problem. Also, you have to define a coworker. I have my steady job but I volunteer/freelance work at some other places at times. I won’t mess with the steady job but the other employment places are a possibility. If you’re younger and have a summer internship or something like that, date away, live the life.

2) Neighbor: Same thing as a coworker, accept possibly worse. You can’t crap where you eat. If things got very bad with your co-worker, you could change jobs. Sure it would suck, but it can be done. If you break up with your neighbor, it would be much tougher to find another place to live.

Exception: I live in a home with neighbors that I cross often. However, if you’re in an apartment complex and say you live on the third floor and the ex is on the 10th floor that can be manageable. Also, if you’re visiting somewhere for the summer and going to your permanent residence in the fall, that’s cool to hook up with a neighbor.

3) Sibling of good friend: This one needs some explaining. First, I blame Friends for making this crap kosher to many people. In real life, there is no way that Chandler and Monica should have dated or even married if Ross wasn’t such a pussy and let that go down. Can’t happen.

If you started to date someone and over time you became good friends with the sibling of your partner, that’s fine. However, if the reverse happened, for me it would be dating one of my buddy’s sisters, that’s a recipe for disaster.

First, your buddy will know about your dating past even if it is positive and this is bad. If your past is solid, he will expect the same from you. If your past was bad, you are going to be held to an unfair standard. Second, your buddy will always choose his sister if the battle comes between you and your girlfriend. The buddy may acknowledge that his sister has her moments and may be wrong a time or two, but in the end, he’s going to stick with his blood which he really should do anyway. Third, your buddy is going to be feeding information to his sister about you, even if its unintentional.

Finally, when the breakup happens and trust me, it will happen, how awkward is that situation. No one wants to be involved with that situation.

4) Ex partner of a good friend: I blame Friends for this shit as well. Remember when Joey started dating Rachel after Ross did? WTF? Wow, Ross really was a loser. Wasn’t Ross the father of Rachel’s baby or was it Joey and didn’t Joey date Rachel while she was pregnant or something like that? I stopped watching the show towards the end but that is so uncool, that whole scenario.

First, when your buddy is dating someone, you care supposed to be the objective arbiter of the whole relationship. Your job is to support your buddy and give him votes of confidence when he’s doing the right thing and call him out when he isn’t doing right. You can tell your buddy that his girlfriend is acting mean right now but remind him to listen to her once in a while and treat her well, stuff like that.

How can you do that when deep down you’re trying to hit that for yourself?

How I Met Your Mother is doing this crap as well and I don’t appreciate it.

Furthermore, talk about awkward, when all parties involved are at the same location for the same event, that can’t be comfortable.

Have I been attracted to a sister/cousin/aunt/granddaughter of a good friend in the past? Of course, but I tried my best to not go there if possible.

Exceptions: This one is so tricky; I don’t think that there really is one. If you decide to go this route, you had better be on your best behavior because when the breakup happens, you will lose a partner and good friend.

5) Student-athlete: For me, it’s the student-athlete. For the rest of you, who are in a supervisory position, don’t date someone who you look over. That’s not a good situation and even worse than the co-worker mention earlier.

There are some serious legal ramifications with this one and that’s no joke. You break up and it ends badly, you can be served with some papers that you want no part of. Also, you will probably be blamed because you are the supervisor and the more senior member of the situation so you will bear the burden of the blame, even if it wasn’t your fault.

Now, its not technically illegal for me to be involved with a student/athlete or someone that I may supervise like a student worker or intern, but it would be a bad, bad move for several reasons. The student/athlete one is probably the most official unwritten rule in college athletics and it probably is not acceptable on some level legally so just walk away.

The student worker or intern situation isn’t as cut and dry, just be careful.

Have I been attracted to a student-athlete or a student-worker in my career? You know I’m too smart to address this one specifically.

Exceptions: This one is easy. When you get a new job, everyone at your old place are fair game.

6) Everyone who isn’t between the ages of 22-37: My age range is to date someone who is five years younger than me to ten years older. People tell me that I should reverse it, but if I did that, I would be looking to date 17-year olds which is disgusting. Maybe when I reach 35, I can switch it up, but for now, this is my range.

Exceptions: If I cross paths with a 21-year old who I find interesting, I’ll talk to her. Actually this happened a few weeks ago with Donna, read here: http://pourtoutpancakes.blogspot.com/2008/09/general-thoughts-on-thursday-night.html

She’s cool and everything but I have to be careful because it messes with my retirement from pursuing women aggressively she is very, very cute, sweet and I think potentially attracted to me (it’s the beard, I know) , I’m heeding my own advise and letting it happen naturally.

Who are on your no-date list? I would be interested in knowing. Until then, remember to love the Jesus and he will love you too. Here’s some Underworld with River of Bass, a chill tune I like:

Kige Ramsey

This man represents everything that is wrong with sports today...how's that for a post People's Champion?

Would you break up with a boyfriend/girlfriend over a movie?

What’s up everyone? I have a presentation tomorrow for one of my classes that I really need to work on tonight so that I can be prepared for it. But I also want to blog about something. It was a tough decision, but I’m living with the decision.

One of my favorite shows on TV is How I Met Your Mother. It’s based in the NYC, follows a group of friends in their early 30’s, stuff that I can be down with. Its on Monday nights on CBS, so check it out.

Anyway, one of the new characters on the show is Stella played by a starter on my top-five, Sarah Chalke, from Scrubs.

That’s why she’s on the team. Stella is engaged to a character named Ted on the show. The season premier that aired a few weeks ago disturbed me. Ted’s best friend Marshall was joking that Ted didn’t know much about Stella even though he was engaged to her. Things happen and Ted finds out that Stella has never seen Star Wars, his favorite movie of all time. Marshall is shocked when he learns this, saying that "nobody" hasn't seen Star Wars.

They end up watching it and Ted concludes that it is the best movie ever and that if Stella dislikes it, he cannot marry her. The next night, Ted and Stella watch Star Wars, but Ted is really watching Stella to gauge her reaction. She wants to make out but he rebuffs her with "great scene, great scene".

Eventually Stella kicks him out so she can watch the movie alone. When it's over, she tells Ted and Marshall she loved it. Ted is ecstatic and then leaves the room. Stella then confides to Marshall that she hated the movie. Marshall is very concerned by this because Ted really, really loves Star Wars. Stella is, however, convinced that she can pretend to love this movie for the rest of her life with Ted.

Everyone ends up happy but seriously, you were about to break up an engagement over a damn movie?

What this episode brought to light was the concept of why people who like spending time with each other and dating find ways to screw it up over stupid stuff.

If I’m dating someone, my tolerance/standards are relatively low. I’m attracted by all types of women. I’ve always said that I can find 95% of the women in this world attractive and I still stand by that belief. Skin color, hair color, body shape, eyes, I’m open to it all. Sure, I have my preferences at times like brunettes, brown eyes, light brown skin, but that change over time, its case by case.

There have been blondes that I thought were amazing and brunettes who I didn’t find so attractive. I’m an open book. Here are my main qualifications to be my girlfriend/wife/mistress/cuddle buddy/etc.

1) Have to like the black man. This should go without explaining. I’m black so if you’re not down with the Black man, you can’t be down with me. Let’s extend that further; you should love every man and woman, including The Man. I have no beefs with The Man and she shouldn’t either. What I’m trying to say is that she has to be down with all types of people because my social circle has all types of people in it. Some are rich, some are poor, some are men, and some are women. Every race is represented. The worst thing you can say to me is “I don’t like (insert gender, race, sexuality, religion here).” I don’t roll like that and she shouldn’t either.

2) Have a job and or in school. We gotta have something positive going on in our lives. I’m in school and have a job, she should have one too. I work in sports so my finances aren’t the strongest. Plus, I find intelligence a very attractive feature in a woman…Power too, I love powerful women, lets move on before I say something stupid.

3) Comprehend sports but not be an Eagles, New Jersey Devils, New York Islanders fan. I was speaking with Joel the other day and since he’s a big Alabama fan, he can’t date an Auburn fan. I feel where he’s coming from with that, somewhat. I joked in a post earlier this week that as long as my girlfriend knows when a homerun is hit or that a touchdown can’t happen in a basketball game, I can work with it.

I do take my sports seriously, but I’m not going to sabotage a relationship if she doesn’t want to watch a NBA game with me. There are more important things like that. However, the more she knows about sports, the better it is for both of us.

Why the Eagles, Devils and Islanders? Those are the teams that I can never, ever come around to liking. Notice some teams missing, don’t you. Would I date a Tennessee fan? I really would while thinking about it. It wouldn’t be preferred but if I stay in this state, its going to happen and I have to accept it. Would I date a Braves fan? I lived in Atlanta for three years, it happened so its not the worst thing in the world. Why not the Cowboys or Redskins? Cowboys are too clichĂ© and I like Texas women, what’s up Amber. Redskins? Hate them too, but not enough to break up with a woman.

4) Likes music. I like music a lot as you have noticed on this blog and the girlfriend has to like music in her life because it’s a big part of mine. OK, now you may be asking, what if she isn’t a Mars Volta fan, my favorite band and whose music I literally listen to everyday? That band isn’t for everybody and if she didn’t like them, that’s fine.

5) Accept my quirks. This goes both ways. She’s going to have some odd things about her that I’m going to accept. She has to know that I watch General Hospital every day. She’s going to have to know that I play video games every day without fail. She’s going to have to understand that when the Ultimate Fighter, Scrubs, CSI: NY, Chuck, Boston Legal or The Office are on, that’s not hook up time, its viewing time.

Crap, I just sounded like Ted right there. Funny, I write a post here to be the opposite of Ted, but I end up sounding like him in the end.

When I was speaking with Watson last week, she wants to find me a date and this got me thinking about what I want from a girlfriend and then the episode came on TV to ring this home.

Maybe my standards are too picky or not picky enough and that’s why I’ve struggled in my dating life. Really, I just live my life and see what happens and part of that is not letting the little stuff getting in the way.

What are your thoughts on this? What is/are the things that you can’t be flexible on when dating someone? List them in the comments section.

Here’s some Incubus that I was playing a few days ago. Love these guys.

NFL Review Week Five

Usually on Tuesday night, I review every NFL game and give you some thoughts on it. However, I’m tired, just watched the Presidential Debate and not in the mood to truly give some analysis.

If you want a comical power ranking, check out this link from Deadspin: http://deadspin.com/5059549/oh-for-the-days-of-rape-and-murder-questions-at-debates

But, to be fair, I’m going to do a one to five-word association with each team and tell you the first thoughts on each team, which may include a fantasy football note or two

St. Louis: Changing coaches means nothing
Detroit: Firing Millen means even less
Cincinnati: Chris Henry represents what’s wrong
Kansas City: Edwards isn’t solution or problem
Oakland: Can’t fire Davis, until then more losses (sorry that’s more than five words)
Houston: Quarterback cost them first win
Cleveland: Braylon microcosm of bad season
Seattle: Sucks to be Seattle sports fan now
San Francisco: Should have drafted Frank Gore
Green Bay: Can’t lose to Atlanta at home
San Diego: Biggest paper champions of decade
Arizona: Don’t retire, Kurt Warner, seriously
Miami: Wildcat can be next Run and Shoot
New Orleans: Fun to watch, lose often
Minnesota: What happened Adrian Peterson?
Indianapolis: Win ugly, just surviving
Atlanta: Ryan Pro Bowl QB?
Tampa: No one cares, go Rays!
Baltimore: Beat Giants in Super Bowl, bastards
New England: Welcome back Randy Moss
Jacksonville: Average, just plain average
Chicago: Long live Kyle Orton
Philly: In wrong division
Buffalo: Get well Trent Edwards
Denver: Cutler for MVP, seriously
Carolina: Good for John Fox
Pittsburgh: Needs a bye like right now
Dallas: Better be careful of overconfidence
Tennessee: Run the ball, stop the run
Washington: Zorn/Campbell = Walsh/Montana (just kidding, fuck the Redskins…yes, I used a bad word but I will never like them).
Giants: Champs until proven otherwise

That’s what I’ve got. Until then, good fight, good night.

Am I still a Sports Fan?

No goofy picture, straight to the point...

When I was sitting in the press box for the Vanderbilt/Auburn game eating a meal with Brett and Meggie, I thought about where I was and how I got to that point.

OK, let’s take it back a few years. For the first 18 years of my life, I was a relatively normal sports fan who let the wins and losses of my team affect my mood. If the New York Giants won a game on a Sunday, I was a happy guy that entire week. If the Mets won a game in the summer, it would make my day. However, when those teams blew games, it would make me sad and affect my morale. I always made sure to follow the rest of the teams in the leagues to gain the most knowledge possible, but I always held a spot for the Giants, Mets, Rangers, Knicks, in that order. I was a very passionate fan who would go to the games and boo and jeer just as hard as anyone there. Then, I went to Vanderbilt.

To be honest with you, one of the main reasons that I went to Vanderbilt besides the education, good weather, hot co-eds, being closer to my family in Georgia, the beautiful women, the nice campus, the women was the chance to see free SEC sports, especially football.

I would look at games on TV and see Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee and the other teams and want to be a part of that atmosphere. When I visited Vandy in the spring of 1999 and they told me that I can go to the games for free, it was a wrap, I said no to going to school in Vermont, imagine that, and made my way to Nashville.

Funny thing about the whole visit. No one told me about how bad Vanderbilt football was. I was just trying to see some games with some new friends. First game of the 1999 season was a home contest against Alabama and Shaun Alexander. I was in the stands and at that Alabama was ranked and wouldn’t you know it, Vandy was winning the contest. However, my Commies found a way to blow the lead and drop the contest.

Let’s take it even further, that same season, Vandy is beating Georgia that same season at home and the Bulldogs are ranked in the top-15 that year. Vandy is forced to punt the ball on their own-20 with the lead in the second half. What does Vandy do? Calls a fake punt! Of course it gets stopped and Vandy loses.

Let’s keep the theme going with that 1999 season. Vandy loses a tough game to a top-10 Florida team on the road before hosting Kentucky and sporting a record of 5-4. Vandy has two games left, hosting the Wildcats before heading to a top-five Tennessee team on the road over Thanksgiving weekend. Vandy moves the Kentucky game to a nighttime contest and its on ESPN 2. It’s a “blackout” and everyone is in black in the stands including me, and I was in a “festive” mood after prepartying at Kappa Sig. Shouts out to the Kappa Sigma brothers out there, good times at that house. Anyway, we get to the game and we know that if Vandy gets to six wins, they will be bowl eligible and have a winning record.

So Vandy is down by two late, late in the game and they’re driving down the field . I’ll never forget this. The running back fumbles the ball deep in Kentucky territory, the Wildcats recover and the final score is 24-20. I’ve never been so sad after a loss with any of my teams ever. I was supposed to continue the partying that night, but I just went back to my dorm room, said nothing to my roommate and went to sleep.

Of course Vandy loses the Tennessee game, finishes 5-6 and my fandom actually diminished over time. Vandy went 3-8 in 2000, 2-9 in 2001 including a loss at Florida under that jerk Steve Spurrier 71-13 in the most blatent example of running up the score that I’ve ever seen. I still haven’t forgiven Stevie for that one. Finally, in 2002, they went 2-10.

While sitting in the stands during all of these loses, I learned to look at sports as less of an attriction of my passion and as more of an event. I liked going to the games, tailgating, having a few pops but I wanted more.

After graduating from Vandy, I moved around between the NYC, Atlanta, Charleston and wanted to get back involved in sports in some capacity.

When I got my break at Georgia Tech working in game day operations, the first thing that they taught me was to not cheer in the press box. I had to be a professional and act mature.

You’re asking me how does that tie into my Vandy experiences? Well, when you see your team get beaten often and the opposing fans act like jerks around you and taunt you, you learn how it feels to be on the losing end of a contest. When I work at a press box, there are representatives from both teams in the contest and I have to consider the feelings of the team that’s losing the contest and not be mean to them.

So this season, I’ve been working at the Vandy games in the press box and this year has been great because the team is doing so well. Amazing stuff.

When I was making my mile walk from my car to the stadium because I couldn’t find parking, I saw all of the fans tailgating, having a great time. I wanted to be out there with them, eating some food, having some drinks, but I couldn’t because I was working for Vandy and for Belmont, who I was posting some sports stories for that day as well.

It was kinda lonely because I was walking to the game alone and knew that I would be leaving alone but that’s the nature of my life right now and I accept that.

Once I finally reach the pressbox, do my Belmont stories, I have the meal with Brett and Meggie. I tell Meggie that I saw all of the people out there tailgating and wanted to be a part of that. But then I thought about that for a moment.

I’ve busted my ass for years now to become a sports professional and while I work in a fun industry, it requires sacrifices. I can be out there having a good time, but I want to be in the Nashville sports scene as much as possible, even if that means volunteering for Vandy games.

The whole reason that I’m putting myself through all of this is to become someone more than a fan. Nothing wrong with being a fan, I still am one despite how this post may make me sound, but I want more.

This point was driven home when I headed down to the field to do my postgame duties and saw all of the fans in the stands. I had a credential to be on the field in one of the biggest wins in Vandy history because I had the drive to better my career. All of my past experiences made me come to this point and I was getting emotional on the field.

I really wanted to shout and cheer for Vandy but the same rules in the press box apply for the field during the game. I looked around and held back my tears because the moment was so strong for me.

I did my postgame duties and walked past the same tailgaters on the way to my car, smiled, drove home and went to sleep.

The whole experience made me question how much of a sports fan I am right now? Working in sports, especially in my position, takes a lot of time and is draining. The pay isn’t great, the hours are long and the accolades and glory are small.

Sometimes it means working days on end without time off. Sometimes it means not having a meaningful relationship in your life.

Do I plan to have this lifestyle in five years? Probably not, but I know that I can’t and won’t be that innocent sports fan I was as a youth again. I know too much about the operations of how this industry works and want to embrace all of it.

When I was a kid, I looked at a game, lets say football, saw the players, the score and kept it moving. Now, I look for the operations of the game. Who are the referees of the contest. How is the stadium structured. What security plan are they using. How functional is the press box. What uniforms are they wearing. Where are the cameras placed, if there are cameras at all. Where are the season ticket holders at. How much is each ticket. Who is buying the tickets. I can go for hours on tickets.

You get the idea. I look at the sport as an event that is operated.

Do I want to be a blind fan of sports again? No, I want to be a fan of the sports industry and that’s why I work in it. Does that make me less of a fan? Fan is short for fanatic and I’m not a fanatic, I’m a business man. But the best business men are fanatical about their business which for me is sports.

That may or may not make sense, but each of us can figure that out somehow.

Until then, good fight, good night.

Oh, I was listening to some Pandora radio and they were bumping some Alice in Chains, one of my favorite groups ever. Here’s some of their music.

My Final Review of my MLB Predictions

Well, its finally time to review my preseason MLB predictions for this season. Not so good in some parts, decent on some others.

First, some quick playoff thoughts. At this moment, Tampa is beating Chicago and will probably move on the ALCS. Baseball story of the decade so far, Red Sox included. If any of you obsessive loser Red Sox Nation losers want to battle me, bring it on.

In the NL, we have the Dodgers against Phillies. Decent match up, damn Cubs didn’t show up.

Let’s get to the picks.

Here were my choices before the season started for the National League:

NL East- Phillies (Unfortunately for me, the Mets fan, this one was correct)
NL Central- Milwaukee (Cubs ended up taking care of business in this division but not after a decent run by the Brewers)
NL West- Arizona (I called this division terrible throughout the entire season, yet its division champion just swept the best team in the league, so what can you do. You can try to not mention that team based in Phoenix.)
Wild Card- Colorado (Finished eight games out of wild card, which is not really good. Let’s keep it moving.)
NL Champions- Arizona (Not a good choice)
NL MVP- Prince Fielder/Ryan Howard (I can make an argument for Howard, but this one should go to Albert Pujols. That guy is a warrior.)
NL Cy Young- Johan Santana (I can make an argument for Johan. That bullpen screwed him out of some more wins. His performance against Florida in the next-to-last game of the season, the three-hitter shutout on a bum knee was inspiring. Give it to Tim Lincecum or CC Sabathia. )
NL Manager of the Year- Bob Melvin (I still think that Lou Pinella should get this one because it’s a regular season award.)
NL Surprise Team- Cincinnati (The Natti are progressing, but its gotta be the Cardinals or even Houston, who actually finished with a better record. )
NL Disappointment- Chicago and San Diego (This Cubs pick looked worse during the regular season but I guess they evened out in the postseason. The Padres stunk).
NL Worst Team- San Francisco (even worse than Pittsburgh) They weren’t the worst team in the league, that honor goes to the Nationals, but the Giants did have a better record than Atlanta, Pittsburgh and San Diego.

My standings predictions for each division and the current ones:

My NL East:

1) Philadelphia
2) New York
3) Atlanta
4) Washington
5) Florida

Final NL East:

1) Philadelphia
2) New York
3) Florida
4) Atlanta
5) Washington

Here’s what I wrote about this division in the beginning of the season:
NL East- 1) Philadelphia- I don't understand why people are lukewarm on this team. I think they have the best lineup in the division top to bottom and the pitching staff is solid. I would worry about Brad Lidge in the bullpen though and I know losing Rowland won't help the team. I still like them to at least win the division. 2) New York- Ah, my beloved Mets. I have such a love/hate relationship with them. Starting Pitching is ok. Santana speaks for himself and he will have a monster year. Pedro is hurt as usual and Maine and Perez are up and down. Fifth starter won't bring much to the table. Lineup is good but not as great as people make it out to be. There are some major holes in it, especially in the corner outfield positions and catcher. Bullpen is good. I think that they will not win the division in the end. 3) Atlanta- I really wanted to pick them ahead of New York, but I like the Mets rotation a little bit more. Besides that, Braves are going to be a good team this year. 4) Washington- Going to a new ballpark will give them a few extra wins and they are getting some young talent. Why the Mets traded Milledge, I don't know. 5) Florida: Ramirez is good, Uggla is solid and I like Andrew Miller. Everything else you can keep. We'll see these guys around in a few years and they will contend for a world series at that point.

I liked the Phillies, which was nice for me. The Mets did what they do. I was wise to be lukewarm on Atlanta. The Braves crappiness has been a personal highlight and joy for me. Washington doesn’t even exist to me and Florida surprised in a positive way.

My NL Central:

1) Milwaukee
2) Cincinnati
3) Chicago
4) St. Louis
5) Houston
6) Pittsburgh

Final NL Central:

1) Chicago
2) Milwaukee
3) Houston
4) St. Louis
5) Cincinnati
6) Pittsburgh

My thoughts earlier in the season:
NL Central- 1) Milwaukee- I love the experience that these young guys gained last season. These guys are ready to make the leap and take this surprisingly competitive division. 2) Cincinnati- I love to take chances in my predictions and this is a big one. I like their young arms and the lineup isn't bad at all. Dusty Baker brings them some credibility and I think they will finish second. 3) Chicago- Cubs fans don't want to see this. Honestly, I think the Cubs are better then Cincinnati and maybe even Milwaukee on paper, but I see them taking a major step back this season. 4) St. Louis- Pujols is a beast but doesn't have much support. Injuries and age have taken a toll on this team the last few years accept for the world championship in '06. 5) Houston- Oswalt, Berkman and El Cabayo (Carlos Lee) are solid, but not much else. Pence is good to and Tejada may be washed up. 6) Pittsburgh- I watched a Pirates/Marlins game on TV last night and only knew one or two Pirates. They're going to be bad.

The Cubs were a bad prediction for me. Also, the Natti let me down. Props to St. Louis and Houston for going above expectations. The Brewers made the playoffs which was big for that franchise. Pittsburgh, well, at least you have good food, the Penguins and Steelers.

My NL West:

1) Arizona
2) Colorado
3) Los Angeles
4) San Diego
5) San Francisco

Current NL West:

1) Los Angeles
2) Arizona
3) Colorado
4) San Francisco
5) San Diego

Thoughts at the beginning of the season:

NL West- 1) Arizona- The Diamondbacks win the most competitive division in baseball. The pitching is outstanding and the lineup will improve because everyone is a year older. They win a lot of close games and that wins divisions. 2) Colorado- I love the lineup and they have the experience. I still just don't trust the pitching long-term. Good enough to win the wildcard but not good enough to repeat a pennent. 3) Los Angeles-Torre, play the young guys and you may sneak into a wild-card spot. 4) San Diego- Money Pitching + Cheap Hitting = No success and an angry Jake Peavy 5) San Francisco- No Bonds + Old as Dirt Lineup + Young Pitchers still learning + Crappy Barry Zito = Last place in division and possibly worst record in league and baseball.

The Dogdes rode Manny Ramirez to a division title, good times for them. Furthermore, props to Joe Torre as well. Even though I grew up despising the Yankees during their glory days, the only three guys I never had beefs with were Torre, Derek Jeter and David Wells. I had times where I disliked Paul O’Neill, Mariano Rivera, Bernie Williams and many of the other guys. So congrats to Torre.

Arizona disappointed me, Colorado even more but I shouldn’t have been so quick to give them a playoff spot after doing something last season that won’t be done again for another generation. The Giants are going to have tough times for a few more years and San Diego is probably the same.

On to the American League:

AL East- Boston (Tampa won it but Boston held their own)
AL Central- Cleveland (not a good pick)
AL West- Seattle (terrible, terrible, terrible, terrible, and one more time, terrible pick)
Wild Card- Toronto (Another 85+ win season, another missed playoff spot)
AL Champs- Cleveland (let’s just move on)
AL MVP- Manny Ramirez (This can still happen right?)
AL Cy Young- Roy Halladay (Roy should still get some consideration but Cliff Lee gets this award.)
AL Manager of the Year- Terry Francona (this is Joe Maddon’s award, manager of Tampa Bay. Terry has done a good job and you have to consider that loser manager of Anaheim, the manager of the Twins and Ozzie.)
AL Surprise Team- Kansas City (Not the best choice but not as bad as Seattle. I wonder who this award should go to…)
AL Disappointment Team- Yankees and Anaheim (Yankees, yes…Anaheim did well.)
AL Worst Team- Baltimore (I was worried about this pick, but the Orioles failed enough to have the second-worst record behind…frickin Seattle!)

My AL East:

1) Boston
2) Toronto
3) New York
4) Tampa Bay
5) Baltimore

Final AL East:

1) Tampa Bay
2) Boston
3) New York
4) Toronto
5) Baltimore

Thoughts in May:

Here's how the AL East breaks down: 1) Boston- They are the most complete team in the division. 2) Toronto- They have the tools to overtake New York, they just have to stay healthy. 3) New York- They will still win around 85 games, but their pitching staff is too young and too old at the same time, which is hard to do. 4) Tampa Bay- The Rays are going to not finish in the cellar, congrats. They have some young talent. 5) Baltimore- Its going to be a long year at Charm City.

I was on point with the Yankees. No one had Tampa doing what they did.

My AL Central:

1) Cleveland
2) Detroit
3) Kansas City
4) Chicago
5) Minnesota
Current AL Central:

1) Chicago
2) Minnesota
3) Cleveland
4) Kansas City
5) Detroit

May Thouhgts:

AL Central- 1) Cleveland- Most complete team in the division. I'm banking on Pronk finding his stroke again and C.C not eating himself out of a big contract. 2) Detroit- World Championship lineup, Pennent starting pitching, .500 Bullpen. This won't be Detroit's year. 3) Kansas City- I think these guys can surprise some people this season. I've seen their first few games and like what I've seen from them. 4) Chicago- I just have a bad vibe about this team and their overall chances. 5) Minnesota- They still have Mauer and Morneau, but they lost too much this off-season. As a general baseball fan, I hope Liriano comes back healthy, because he's a joy to watch.

Completely off with these predictions. Cleveland has been documented well enough, but what the heck happened in Detroit? First the Tigers, the Lions are actually worse than the Raiders this year and the Pistons are not even going to make the Eastern Conference Finals this year, you heard it here first.

Once again, my apologies to the fine people of Minnesota for saying that your team would be terrible. My bad.

My AL West:

1) Seattle
2) Anaheim
3) Oakland
4) Texas

Current AL West:

1) Anaheim
2) Texas
3) Oakland
4) Seattle

My May Thoughts:

AL West- 1) Seattle- Bedard will be the difference maker in this division. The lineup is solid, but not great. King Felix is a special pitcher if he stays healthy and I'm banking on a decent season from him health-wise. He stays healthy the whole season and he's winning the Cy Young award, its that simple. 2) Anaheim- I know they are the Los Angeles Angels of whatever. Anyway, their starting rotation is banged up, which I don't like at all. They will score some runs, but in the long run, they won't make the postseason. 3) Oakland- They blown up their team once again and are going with the youngsters. I trust Billy Beane's knowledge, but its going to be a rough year for them. 4) Texas- I like nothing about this team accept Josh Hamilton. The pitching is awful. Nothing else to say here.

Well, Seattle is terrible. I talked bad about the sports scene in Detroit, but what about Seattle? Seahawks stink, Mariners were awful and now in one of the worst sports moves I’ve ever seen, the Sonics are out of town. Hold on Seattle. The Grizzlies are going to move to Seattle in a few years, the Mariners have to get better one day and the Seahawks, well, at least you have good coffee.

Those are my predictions. Mock me completely about them, I welcome it. Until then, stay up and you will never stay down.

Sunday Reflections

Hey everyone, hope your week was well. It’s time for some Reflections, Vanderbilt football-style:

-The highlight of the week was seeing my Vanderbilt Commodores become 5-0 on the season after beating Auburn on Saturday night. Well, first, I went to the ESPN Gameday show at Peabody or the Commons, on Saturday morning, which was an amazing time yet boring. It was surreal seeing Chris, Lee, Kirk and Desmond only a few yards away. The boring part is that the guys do their thing on TV and then during commercial breaks, you just stand there. So you stand there for a few minutes doing nothing and then when the cameras are on, you start making noise.

-Continuing on the GameDay show, I liked two signs. The first one was the now known one “Phil Fulmer ate my other sign.” It’s always a good time making fun of that guy. Keep barely beating Northern Illinois at home, I love it. The second one was “The geeks shall inherit the turf.” As an alum, this is true. Vandy people are dorks. We are. If you read this blog enough, you already knew that. The fact that the football team is doing so well is tremendous.

-Why was Kenny Chesney there? I don’t mind the guy’s music but not only is he from Knoxville or Redneck Central, USA, he’s an unabashed East Tennessee Hillbilly College fan. I was not happy seeing him on my school’s turf.

-My thoughts on Corso pulling the switch-a-roo with his predictions? First, his predictions are mostly wrong, so I wanted no part of his mojo. Second, when he throw Commie’s head to the side, I was pissed. Then, when he pulled out that hunting or community roadside cleanup orange jersey out, it was war. I don’t think he understands how much us Commodores dislike that orange. I was pissed for about ten minutes, but then the WWE fan in me actually dug it. I was talking with two friends in the press box at the game, Brandon and Thomas, about it and all of us like wrestling and agreed that the move was something that Shawn Michaels or Ric Flair would pull. So Corso, you’re not on my screw you list, but you’re pushing it.

-The game itself was a tale of quarters. The first quarter finished and I thought that Auburn was going to put a number on Vandy, it looked that bad. Then the rest of the game just unfolded Vandy’s way. I will say this, if you’re an Auburn fan, I would be pissed at that offense. That was bad to see in person.

-Towards the end of the game, I got on the field to take care of my post-game duties and the sight of all of those fans in the stands was amazing. I’m not supposed to cheer and stay professional and be neutral. It was so hard to not cheer and hold my emotions in. I was actually getting emotional when Vandy was taking the knee to run out the clock. Corso walked right past me and a fan from the stands started heckling him in a playful way. Corso looked up at the fan and smiled at him. Gotta respect that. Then, I saw Desmond Howard cheering like Michigan just won the Rose Bowl. He was feeling the moment. I was just so happy for the team, the fans, everyone.

-I’ve held off on writing a post about the changing state of Vanderbilt football because it’s not over. I’m taking two mentalities. First, I’m waiting to see how the season really plays out and taking it one game at a time, just like the team is. Its my nature to be skeptical and not make grand proclamations like the program has turned a corner or something like that. Second, I’m just going to enjoy the moments and live through them and not over analyze.

-OK, done with the Vandy talk for now.

-The Cubs. Sorry Joan. I’m a Mets fan who grew up disliking the Cubs and they’re performance this playoffs was insulting to me. How do you get swept by the Dodgers? Well, at least they’re team made the playoffs, speaking of which…

-So I was talking to Joan this weekend and telling her how much I loved her…Just messing with ya’ll. She hasn’t gotten a mention in a long time.

-OK, back to the Presidential Debate which is taking place only a few blocks away from where I live. I’ll be watching on Tuesday and probably give you a report on Wednesday about it.

-Let’s see. The New York Giants are 4-0, the Tennessee Titans are 5-0, I’ve already spoken about Vandy, Georgia Tech is 4-1 and even my adopted team the Atlanta Falcons are a frisky 3-2 after winning at Green Bay today. I’m so not used to this football success, seriously. I know that not all of the teams are going to win championships or anything like that, but living in this moment has been a fun time to be a football fan.

-I’m listening to The Cure on Pandora Radio and its tight. The song on now is Want, look it up when you have a chance.

-Now I’m listening to some music from A Perfect Circle, from an acoustic set that they did. Love it and want to share it with you below:

-How is the retirement from trying to date women going Etienne or Marcel depending on who you are? Its going ok. The beard I think has shown my seriousness to myself and commitment to making myself happy instead of searching for it through someone else.

I was speaking with Watson this week and she asked me if I was trying to date anyone and for the first time I looked at someone in their eyes and said no and didn’t feel bad about it. She was funny in telling me that she’s going to help me find someone and that was sweet of her, but I’m not focused on that right now. Now, if I crossed paths with someone and we wanted to spend some time together, I wouldn’t object to letting her enter my life. However, if she can’t name at least three WAC teams, two teams from the MAC, MEAC and MAAC (yes, those are three different conferences) and tell me what the mascot of San Jose State, San Diego, New Mexico State or Utah State, she’s out.

-Just kidding. I told Watson this and she told me that I’m not going to find a girl who’s going to know this. I said that I was joking…or was I?

-Of course I’m joking. I’m going to meet a woman one day that digs art and wants me to break down a painting and I’m screwed. However, we’ll work it out. As long as she doesn’t believe that the Mets need to score more touchdowns or the Knicks need to hit more home runs and we’re set.

-OK, those were some long ramblings and I want to get some sleep. The good news is that I have some downtime this week, so I will be blogging long and hard, that’s what she said…doesn’t apply, understood. Here’s what I’m going to try to get to this week.

Monday: Final Review of my MLB predictions and how much of a sports fan am I now
Tuesday: NFL Week Review
Wednesday: How an episode of How I Met Your Mother made me think of relationships
